Which Type Of Forklift Fuel Is Right For You?

There are many fuel types for forklifts but do you know what the advantages of each are?

The type of application you have may determine whether you purchase a diesel, gas (LPG) or battery-electric forklift.

We've summarised the advantages of each fuel type below to help you determine which one will best suit your business.

  • More suited to heavy handling and outdoor applications
  • Typically higher-powered forklifts
  • Requires good ventilation for exhaust emissions
  • Able to function in wet weather or damp conditions
  • Quick to refuel

Diesel-fuelled forklifts are well suited to rugged, outdoor applications. They offer higher ground clearance to negotiate uneven surfaces, more torque and the ability to handle heavier loads.

  • Lower emission rates
  • Less carbon monoxide
  • Gas cylinders are interchangeable between trucks
  • Most common fuel type among existing forklifts
  • LPG is easily sourced and quickly replaced

LPG-powered forklifts are regarded as a safe and clean option. Maintenance costs are reduced as LPG does not contaminate the crankcase oil, prolonging the life of the fluid.

  • Commonly used for indoor applications
  • No harmful emissions
  • Quiet to operate
  • Cost-effective to run
  • Lower long-term costs

While battery-electric variants are gaining in popularity there is still a place for the traditional diesel and LPG fuel types.

The relative advantages and disadvantages of each fuel type will depend on your particular application, so see a member of our team for more information on the fuel source that will best suit your needs.
